My name is Gary Li, and this is my inaugural online portfolio of landscape photography.

For most of my career, I have been a scientist and a biotech executive (linkedin.com/in/garylibiopharma). Although I always enjoy taking photos and capturing memorable moments with a smart phone, I didn’t pick up a more serious camera until two years ago. These photos here reflect my learning process (from Youtube) during the past two years.

I enjoy nature and appreciate beautiful things around us, but I am very bad at drawing and suffer minor color blindness. So, I found landscape photography. I don’t need to recreate the scene; I just need to capture it. I don’t have to reproduce the colors; I can do whatever adjustments I like to show what I actually see.

I also found great similarities between being a scientist and being a landscape photographer: Serendipity, focus, creativity, attention to details, tolerance for loneliness, adaptation to changes, and ability to discover beauty in the mundane.

I am not a gear person, and I like simple things. Getting out there is more important to me. I use a Sony mirrorless camera, and a set of Sigma zoom lenses, and a compact travel tripod. I put everything in a North Face backpack to be as inconspicuous as possible.

I hope you enjoy what I have here. While I continue to learn and improve, I plan to update the portfolio periodically.

Thank you!
